4,000 Songs In My Pocket

from Snake Road by Englewood

/

lyrics

I remember my mother singing to me when I was just a little child.
I remember my mother sang to me when I was just a little child.
She sang “You are my Sunshine, My Only Sunshine”.

When I got a little older I first heard the Beatles at the house of a next door friend.
Then I got a transistor radio and I tuned it to 1310.
And they played “Skip-a-Rope” and “Outside a Small Circle of Friends”.

Then I got a cassette recorder and I taped “Proud Mary” and “I Got You Babe”.
Then I got my uncle’s old guitar and learned three chords in the key of A.
And we sang “Where have All the Flowers Gone” in harmony.

Then I got a record player of my very own.
I got a white and orange portable record player of my very own.
And the Monkees sang “I’m a Believer” but “I’m not Your Stepping Stone”.

And my father brought home records, like Frank Zappa singing “Suzie Cream Cheese”.
And I learned all the words to all the records , like “The Secret Life of J. Eddy Fink”.
And Seargent Pepper, James Taylor, CCR, and Melanie.

When I moved I got a stereo with speakers big enough for Aerosmith.
When I moved I got a stereo with speakers that were big enough for Aerosmith.
And I sang “Love Hurts, Love Scars” with Nazareth.

And all those music players, you know where they’ve all led.
And all that music playing, you know where it’s all led.
Now I’ve got 4,000 songs in my pocket and the rest in my head.
I’ve got 4,000 songs in pocket, and a mess in my head.
