I’m watching all the busy people
Rushing down the busy sidewalk,
Jamming in the busy city,
Race to be the first to Starbucks.

If they’re going to be the first
They must play chicken with the traffic,

If they hit you with their backpack.

From an office far above I watch
The flowing human ocean.
From behind the quiet glass
It looks like poetry in motion.

The elevator sets me down.
I exit the revolving port,
And push into the sidewalk scrum,
And realize it’s a contact sport.

Everyone has heard about Monday night football,
But here in the city we play Monday morning crush.
Those high paid athletes play a few hours of pro-ball,
But 12 hours a day we play Big City Crush.

The race starts with the morning drive to grab the last parking place.
Then sprinting to the station to make it onto the train.
You wrestle your way into an overcrowded subway car.
Commuting triathlon is not for the weak of heart.
